Importance of physical activity for older people:
Without exercise or mobility, we start to lose strength in our bones and muscle mass.
People who move more, are physically active or exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term (chronic) conditions. It can also help manage many chronic diseases and conditions.
Regular physical activity reduce their risk of the following conditions: Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancers, dementia, falls and obesity (refer to picture)
Physical activity and exercise also play an important role in improving our mental wellbeing: Better sleep, happier moods, and better management of stress, anxiety or intrusive and racing thoughts. Even a short burst of 10min brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood.
